You invested in a website. Maybe you paid good money for it. But it's not bringing in the jobs you expected. Sound familiar?
The reality is that most tradie websites are actively losing jobs — not winning them. After building websites for dozens of tradies across Australia, we've identified the same mistakes over and over. Here's what's going wrong and how to fix it.
Mistake #1: Invisible on Google
Having a website means nothing if nobody can find it. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "emergency plumber Perth," where does your site appear? If it's not on page 1, it might as well not exist.
The Problem
Most DIY websites and cheap templates have zero SEO. No local keywords, no Google Business integration, no location pages. Google can't figure out what you do or where you do it.
The Fix
- Create pages for each service you offer
- Add location-specific pages for your service areas
- Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile
- Get listed in local directories with consistent Name/Address/Phone
- Ask happy customers to leave Google reviews
Mistake #2: Not Mobile-Friendly
Here's a stat that should scare you: over 70% of people searching for local tradies are on their mobile phones. If your site doesn't work perfectly on mobile, you're losing 7 out of 10 potential customers.
The Problem
Text too small to read. Buttons too small to tap. Pages that take forever to load. Forms that are impossible to fill out on a phone.
The Fix
- Test your site on your phone right now
- Ensure text is readable without zooming
- Make buttons and links easy to tap with a thumb
- Put your phone number at the top — tap to call
- Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool
Mistake #3: Hidden Contact Information
You'd be amazed how many tradie websites make it hard to actually contact the tradie. Phone numbers buried in the footer. No visible WhatsApp link. Contact forms that don't work.
The Problem
When someone needs a plumber because their toilet is overflowing, they're not going to hunt for your contact details. They'll hit the back button and call the next guy.
The Fix
- Phone number visible on every page, ideally in the header
- Tap-to-call functionality on mobile
- WhatsApp link for customers who prefer texting
- Contact form that actually works and notifies you
- Clear call-to-action: "Call Now" or "Get a Free Quote"
Mistake #4: No Trust Signals
Customers hiring tradies are nervous. Will you turn up? Will you do a good job? Will you rip them off? Your website needs to answer these fears before they even call.
The Problem
No licence number. No insurance mention. No reviews. No photos of real work. Stock photos of generic tradesmen.
The Fix
- Display your licence number prominently
- Mention your insurance coverage
- Embed Google reviews on your site
- Add real photos of your work (before/after shots)
- Include an "About" section with your story
Mistake #5: Slow Loading Speed
If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, 53% of visitors will leave before it finishes loading. They'll never see your beautiful design or read your compelling content.
The Problem
Massive uncompressed images. Heavy animations. Cheap shared hosting. Too many plugins and scripts.
The Fix
- Compress all images before uploading
- Use modern image formats (WebP)
- Choose quality hosting (not the cheapest option)
- Remove unnecessary plugins and widgets
- Test your speed with Google PageSpeed Insights
Mistake #6: Generic, Boring Content
Does your website say something like "We are a professional plumbing company providing quality services to our valued customers"? That could describe literally any plumber in Australia. It tells the customer nothing.
The Problem
Cookie-cutter content that doesn't differentiate you. No personality. No specific details about what you do or where you work.
The Fix
- Write in plain language, like you're talking to a customer
- Be specific about your services and service areas
- Share your story — why you became a tradie
- Highlight what makes you different (24/7? Family business? 20+ years experience?)
- Update content regularly
Mistake #7: No Clear Call to Action
Someone lands on your site, likes what they see... and then what? If you don't tell them exactly what to do next, they'll do nothing.
The Problem
No buttons. No "Get a Quote" prompts. No urgency. Visitors have to figure out what to do next.
The Fix
- Clear, contrasting "Call Now" or "Get Quote" button on every page
- Multiple contact options (phone, form, WhatsApp)
- Repeat your call-to-action throughout the page
- Create urgency where appropriate ("Book today for same-week service")
How to Check If Your Website Is Losing You Jobs
Ask yourself these questions:
- When you Google "your trade + your suburb," do you appear on page 1?
- Does your site load in under 3 seconds on mobile?
- Can someone call you with one tap from your homepage?
- Is your licence number visible?
- Are there real photos of your work?
- Do you have Google reviews displayed?
- Is there a clear "Get a Quote" or "Call Now" button?
If you answered "no" to any of these, your website is probably costing you jobs.
